OpenAI Rolls Out Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT to Selected Users

OpenAI continues to make headlines with its groundbreaking advancements in artificial intelligence. The company, known for revolutionizing AI with its ChatGPT model, has been continuously enhancing the language model to provide more relevant and contextual assistance to users. In May, OpenAI announced a significant upcoming feature: a Voice Mode for ChatGPT, designed to enable more human-like conversations and personalization. The eagerly awaited Advanced Voice Mode is now being rolled out to select users.

The new feature is currently being tested by a limited number of paid ChatGPT Plus users. This move follows OpenAI’s showcase of the Advanced Voice Mode in May, where the company highlighted its potential to facilitate natural, real-time conversations while minimizing delays or latency. However, the development also sparked controversy with the introduction of an AI-generated voice named “Sky,” which bore a striking resemblance to actress Scarlett Johansson. After legal action from the actress, OpenAI removed the Sky voice from the feature.

OpenAI announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Voice Mode is now available for testing to a select group of ChatGPT Plus users. The company intends to gradually expand access, with the goal of making the feature available to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers by this fall. This new AI tool is a significant upgrade from the existing voice mode, as it can understand and respond to emotions and various situations, creating interactions that feel more natural and human-like.

According to OpenAI, the GPT-4o’s voice capabilities have undergone rigorous testing with over 100 external “red teamers” across 45 different languages. These measures have been implemented to ensure higher quality, privacy, and security standards. The Advanced Voice Mode will initially offer four preset voices: Juniper, Cove, Ember, and Breeze.

The current preset voices are designed to avoid any resemblance to real celebrities, and OpenAI has implemented a built-in system to block any voices that do not match the four programmed options. Additionally, the company has put in place filters and guardrails to prevent the generation of copyrighted content or the misuse of the voice feature. Other multi-modal capabilities, such as video and screen-sharing, were also demoed at the event, but these are not part of the current alpha release and will be introduced later.

OpenAI has stated that it will release a more detailed report in August, outlining the safety measures taken, the feature’s potential, and its limitations.
