Linux Mint 22.3 Features Worth Knowing

Mint 22.3 is an incremental LTS point release rather than a redesign, but several changes matter for everyday usability. The full list is on the official what’s new page; a few stand out.

Troubleshooting tools got a real upgrade. The old “System Reports” tool was renamed “System Information” and expanded with new USB, GPU, PCI and BIOS pages. That’s practical, not cosmetic: seeing exactly which PCI ID and driver a device is assigned makes it easier to describe a hardware problem accurately when asking for help.

None of these is a strict upgrade over the others. Cinnamon is developed primarily by the Mint team and gets new features first; the changes above (new menu, input handling, XSI) land there before anywhere else. Xfce trades some visual polish for lower baseline resource use, making it a common pick for limited RAM or older CPUs, though exact usage depends too much on hardware and session state to quote a fixed number. MATE continues the GNOME 2-style desktop metaphor some long-time users still prefer, following its own development path rather than mirroring Cinnamon.

Linux Mint System Requirements and Hardware

The official minimums, 2 GB RAM, 20 GB storage, 1024×768 display, are modest by design. Mint’s own recommended figures, 4 GB RAM and 100 GB storage, are closer to what comfortable daily use actually needs.

There’s a real gap between “boots and runs” and “feels responsive.” Performance depends on several things at once: CPU headroom for browser tabs and background services; RAM, where 8 GB or more is a more comfortable modern target than the bare minimum; storage type, since an SSD changes how a system feels more than almost any other upgrade, while an HDD-based machine can feel sluggish during app launches even while meeting Mint’s published minimums; and graphics, where recent Intel and AMD integrated GPUs generally work well thanks to the open-source Mesa stack shipped with the Ubuntu base, while NVIDIA hardware usually needs the proprietary driver from Driver Manager, and some Broadcom Wi-Fi chips need extra driver packages.

This is why Mint offers HWE (Hardware Enablement) ISOs. As the HWE page explains, the regular 22.3 ISO ships kernel 6.14, while HWE ISOs currently offer 6.17 or 7.0 for newer hardware. Mint’s guidance is to try the regular ISO first and only move to HWE if it doesn’t work, since proprietary drivers and third-party kernel modules, NVIDIA’s, Broadcom’s, VirtualBox’s, can lag behind on newer kernels.

Installing from the regular ISO also doesn’t lock a system to 6.14 forever; newer kernels become available through Update Manager over the release’s lifetime. None of this amounts to a claim that Mint supports every laptop or peripheral; compatibility is component-specific, and checking a model against forums or vendor documentation before buying is still worthwhile.

Linux Mint Review: What the Desktop Experience Is Like

Cinnamon is the edition most reviews and new users encounter first. The application menu sits bottom-left, opens with a click, and organizes software by category with a search bar, closer to the old Windows 7 Start Menu than GNOME’s app grid. The panel runs along the bottom with a system tray, clock and workspace switcher, all repositionable.

Both draw from the same Ubuntu package base, so software availability is essentially identical for most applications. The differences are in desktop philosophy and default tooling: Mint prioritizes a conventional layout and ships Nemo, Timeshift and Warpinator, while Ubuntu leans into GNOME and Canonical’s own tooling, including Snap packages by default. Fit depends on interface preference and packaging approach, not on one being better overall.

What actually determines whether a specific game runs well is case-by-case: GPU and driver version, the Proton build selected (or native support), whether the title uses kernel-level anti-cheat that doesn’t support Linux, launcher compatibility, and peripheral quirks. Anti-cheat is often the single biggest blocker for a popular multiplayer title, independent of GPU. Checking a title against ProtonDB or its official Linux support statement beats assuming it will just work.

There’s rarely a single universal fix for any of these; the table is a starting diagnostic path. The process stays consistent regardless of symptom: identify what changed recently, narrow down the component using System Information, check logs for specific errors, then apply a targeted fix.

Good practice looks similar to any operating system: keep the system updated through Update Manager, install from official repositories or well-known Flatpak sources, check a PPA’s maintenance status before adding it, keep browsers and extensions current, avoid running unfamiliar forum scripts without understanding them, verify ISO checksums against Mint’s download page, and keep regular backups with Timeshift independent of overall security posture.

Linux isn’t immune to compromise. Linux systems can be affected by malware, misconfigured services, phishing and vulnerable installed software; the attack surface and common threats differ from Windows, but no general-purpose OS is invulnerable.

Is Linux Mint Good for Older PCs?

It depends on how old, and on more than just the desktop environment. The Xfce edition is the better starting point given its lighter default profile, but CPU generation, SSD versus HDD, and functional graphics acceleration all affect day-to-day usability too.
