Google Introduces Chromebook Plus Certification Program to Identify High-Quality Chromebooks

In a move aimed at simplifying the shopping experience for Chromebook enthusiasts, Google has unveiled the Chromebook Plus certification program. Much like Intel’s Evo program for Windows PCs, this initiative is designed to help consumers easily identify high-quality Chromebooks that meet a set of minimum requirements. With the “Chromebook Plus” label, shoppers can trust that Google has deemed the product to be of superior quality.

To receive the coveted Chromebook Plus certification, devices must meet the following criteria:

  • An Intel Core Processor (i3 or higher) or AMD Ryzen 7000 CPU
  • An IPS panel with a minimum of 1080p resolution
  • A 1080p webcam
  • 8GB of RAM
  • 128GB of storage

Notably, one key requirement missing from the list is battery life. While Google’s press release did not explicitly mention battery life, a spokesperson clarified that all Chromebooks, including those with the Chromebook Plus certification, must adhere to a minimum 10-hour battery life standard based on internal testing standards.

While the absence of battery life specifics may raise eyebrows, Chromebooks are widely recognized for their portability, making battery life a crucial factor for on-the-go users.

In addition to meeting these hardware requirements, Chromebooks bearing the Chromebook Plus certification will gain access to exclusive AI-powered features. Some of these features were demonstrated at a recent press event and include a magic eraser tool in Google Photos for automatic background removal, enhanced lighting and noise cancellation in video conferencing, and Offline File Sync, which automatically downloads files from Google Drive to the device.

Google also hinted at forthcoming enhancements, such as AI-generated wallpapers based on text prompts and a “personal writing assistant” for users. Furthermore, Chromebook Plus products will come with a three-month subscription to Photoshop on the Web and three months of GeForce Now’s priority tier.
