Microsoft Upgrades Bing Chat’s Image Generator with OpenAI’s DALL-E 3

In a significant development for AI-powered image generation, Microsoft has announced a substantial upgrade to its Bing Chat and Bing Image Creator services. OpenAI’s latest DALL-E 3 model is now accessible to all Bing Chat and Bing Image Creator users, marking a remarkable leap in the capabilities of these tools. This upgrade has been gradually rolling out over the past week, initially to Bing Enterprise users and subsequently to Bing Image Creator, before finally becoming available to the general public.

Notably, Bing Chat users are gaining access to DALL-E 3 even before OpenAI’s own ChatGPT, which is scheduled for release later this month but limited to paying users. Microsoft is poised to become a leading player in the field of image generation with this move.

DALL-E 3, the third iteration of OpenAI’s image generation model, boasts enhanced understanding of prompts, enabling it to produce images that are both more creative and photorealistic. Additionally, it has been designed with user-friendliness in mind, integrating seamlessly into Bing Chat and ChatGPT. Users can now create and refine images through conversation with a chatbot, eliminating the need for tedious prompt tweaking.

Furthermore, OpenAI has integrated new safety measures into DALL-E 3. The model is programmed not to generate images of public figures and is programmed to avoid creating hateful or NSFW content. Microsoft, within Bing Image Creator, has implemented watermarks on AI-generated images for easy identification, and a content moderation system to ensure compliance with community guidelines.

Microsoft’s plans for DALL-E technology extend beyond Bing. The company is actively working on incorporating the DALL-E model into the Windows Paint app, aptly named “Paint Cocreator,” further expanding the accessibility and utility of this cutting-edge image generation technology.

While DALL-E 3 is theoretically available for all through Bing, it appears that the overwhelming demand has caused server overload issues. Microsoft’s Mikhail Parakhin acknowledged this in a recent statement, saying, “We expected some strong interest, but we didn’t expect THAT much.”

When users do successfully generate images, they can look forward to receiving suggestions for enhancements. For example, the system might suggest adding a rainbow to the background, changing an image from a dog to a cat, or incorporating additional elements like birds around a waterfall. Although some users have experienced challenges due to server load, this feature promises an engaging and collaborative approach to image creation.

In the rapidly evolving world of AI-driven image generation, Microsoft’s integration of DALL-E 3 into Bing Chat and Bing Image Creator is a significant step forward. As these tools continue to mature and as demand stabilizes, users can anticipate a creative and user-friendly image generation experience like never before.
